Down Time

Yesterday we made a short cruise from Brewerton to Baldwinsville and today we aim to make it to Lyons, where we'll catch up with Ava and Jim who are serendipitously vacationing in the area. The ride was soakingly rainy but otherwise pretty straightforward, except for one brief panic attack when I noticed the chart reported an upcoming bridge had only a 15' clearance. We need 15'6", plus it's been raining a lot which could make water levels high. I called the local lockmaster (Tim) who reported they were "at normal pool" and we would be fine. Phew!

There was also a brief thrilling sequence in which:

  • A large fish jumped out of the water

  • An eagle swooped down

  • Much splashing about ensued

  • The eagle rose back up with the fish in its talons

(unfortunately failed to capture this on video)

And we enjoyed several of these highway-type road signs telling us which way to go.

It generally just felt great to be moving again after spending a week in Brewerton. The staff and fellow boaters at the Winter Harbor Marina were lovely and we were treated to one spectacular sunset over the fuel tanks adjacent to our slip.

But the town ... well, there is no town. There's a pizzeria and a library (small but I am endlessly grateful for the Tuesday afternoon Lego Club), and several spots to buy Perry's ice cream. There's a parking lot where on Saturdays, an Amish man unhitches his horse and buggy to sell pies and jam, though I think that may technically be not in Brewerton but in Cicero. There was supposed to be a cornhole tournament, but it was cancelled on account of excessive heat.

So there was some downtime, vastly improved by pool time with Grandma Fran and the fact that Tom, Rafael, John, Tim and team fixed our boat! Stay tuned for news from the Western Erie Canal.
